Hand Made Native American Indian Baskets

Hands Around the World is dedicated to providing a marketplace for traditionally produced Native American baskets, one of the oldest Indian arts and being present in largely unchanged form. The Native Americans have created a repertoire of basket shapes and design elements specific, if not unique, to each tribal grouping. The variety and beauty of these creations are prized throughout the world. Baskets are ideal for starting a Native American art collection.

The Indian baskets offered by Hands Around the World come from several unique tribes. The Yanomamo (Yanomami or Yanomama) are deep jungle Indians living in the Amazon basin in both Venezuela and Brazil. The women weave and decorate the baskets. They make both flat baskets and burden baskets which are carried by a strap around the forehead. The Yekuana Indians are a very traditional tribe living along the river banks in the Amazon Rain Forest in Venezuela. Their basket making is very advanced, reminiscent of the Cherokee's basketry. They weave intricate geometric designs and animals into their baskets and use a variety of natural dyes to create color and contrast.

The Guahibo Indians live in the Amazon Basin of South America weave baskets and hair barrettes using a coil technique with fibers found in the rain forest. The Penare, one of the few Amazon tribes left that live and dress traditionally, are fine basket weavers, traditionally woven by the men. The Warao Indians live on the Orinoco River Delta in Venezuela. The Warao are considered very fine basket makers. Their baskets are often lidded with a strap to carry them with. They also make basket trays.

Hands Around the World also has hand made baskets from the Wai Wai and Penare Indians living in the Amazon rain forest, and the Xerente, Karaja, and Kayapo Indians that reside in the vast plain lands of the Matto Grosso in Brazil, south of the Amazon Basin.
